Wasco High School Rallies

Wasco High School had two rallies that were radically different from each other. The first happened in the beginning of the week in the quad during lunch. Because it was in the quad, we were not allowed to share the Gospel outright. But altogether it was a successful rally. We estimated that around 400 students were present and impacted. Two rappers came and drew a large crowd and then two Biola students gave their testimonies. The testimonies were powerful and held the attention of all who were gathered.

What was really significant about this rally though was the initiative of the Christian club students. The day before the rally, a few of the team members (myself included) went to the school and trained the students how to share their faith.  After a short teaching, we broke them off into pairs and had them practice on each other. For many, this was the first time they had actually shared the story of Jesus. I could tell that quite a few were feeling a bit nervous and extremely unsure of themselves.

However, when the rally day came around they all dispersed throughout the crowd and began to tell the Good News to their peers. I was so impressed by their boldness. I’m sure that twenty-four hours before they would have never imagined that they would be proclaiming the love of God on their public school campus. One or two confessed afterward that it wasn’t half as bad as they were expecting it to be and they actually felt encouraged by it.

The second Wasco rally was actually held off-campus. Wasco High School only has one fifty minute lunch period and it is off-campus. Our team and the club president handed out fliers and chalked up the sidewalk leading to a church about a block away. An ex-drug addict shared his testimony and then laid out the story of Jesus for the 120 students who attended. Out of those students, 19 stood and accepted Christ as their Savior! After the rally, the club members again showed excellent initiative by starting conversations with the students who attended and invited them to the club meetings. We are looking forward to hearing how the club and the students grow and their new brothers and sisters join them!
