Chicago HomeTown Trip 2011

Chicago Hometown Trip Wrap-Up & Results

Thanks so much for your prayers!!!  Fremd & Palatine high school held 12 total rallies last week during which 9 students accepted Jesus Christ for the very first time & at least 70 re-committed their lives to Christ!

On Friday, Fremd saw answered prayer - Friday Fremd rally.  42 re-committed their lives to Christ & 3 accepted Christ for the first time just on Friday, just at Fremd!  At Palatine HS saw some crazy results like that too.  One of the rally days at Palatine HS saw 14 decisions for Christ!  At the first session, 33 attended, 4 recommitted their lives to Christ, and 3 accepted Him for the first time.  At the second session, 10 attended, 5 recommitted their lives to Christ, and 2 accepted Him for the first time.

The CSP Team with Katie & Abby from Fremd

Not only did God work in the lives of non-Christians, but in the lives of the Christians as well.  Heather & Cassie from Palatine HS as well as Katie & Abby from Fremd HS planned, organized & executed the entire outreach week at their schools.  Heather explained that this past summer she had been praying for a way in which God could use her.  With a big smile, she exclaimed,  “This outreach was God’s answer to prayer!” The CSP team simply assisted the high schoolers and provided the tools to exercise their passion.  Katie’s mother, Leigh, emailed,

“You are such a blessing to these high schoolers!  Katie has found a true passion for evangelism through this experience and has grown in too many ways to even count.”

There was immeasurable success in the spiritual growth of the Christians at Fremd & Palatine high schools.

The CSP Team with Heather & Cassie from Palatine HS

Michael Cunningham, CSP team member, created a video which re-caps the outreach week of Chicago Hometown Trip in Palatine.  Check it out here. The video gives great insight into the events of the week & what the rallies looked like.  Chicago Hometown Trip

Thank you for your prayer & financial support!  Palatine area residents, thank you for feeding us, praying with us & housing us!  You have been a blessing to me (Lainey), to the CSP team (Ariel, Kolby, Cassie, Michael C, Jessica, Michael T, Justin & Lainey), to the student leaders (Heather, Cassie, Katie & Abby) and to the high school students in Palatine, Illinois.  God is still working mightily in the missionfield of the public high school campus.

Final Fremd Rally…God shows up!

This week has been a powerful example of how God works in big ways through people who love Him and have willing hearts. God has been faithful all week long, protecting, providing, and bringing people to hear the good news of Jesus Christ! The rallies at Fremd saw between 30 and 45 students in attendance each day this week…

                                                            …until Friday!

Before going to the rally on Friday, the CSP team decided to step out in faith by buying enough pizza for 125 people, believing that God would bring enough students to eat all the pizza without any left over.

The Biola team and Christian students walk around with pizza to advertize the rally

Sure enough… when rally time came…

Current student, Dave, shares his testimony with his fellow students

…approx. 115 students attended the rally and heard the good news of Jesus Christ’s salvation! There was no extra pizza.

“I thought it was really good,” said one student who was reluctant to come to the rally, “I’m glad I came.” Another student mentioned that the rally gave her “a lot to think about”.

Dave, a Fremd senior, shared his testimony of God’s redemption from anger and hate to love and compassion.  Next, Mark Robinson spoke.  Mark graduated from Fremd and is now a youth pastor at The Chapel in Barrington, IL.  He shared about making the most of your high school years.  Mark talked about choosing God’s plan for our lives instead of ours.   In bringing up God’s plan for us, Mark was able to share clearly the message of salvation through Jesus Christ.  Katie, Uprising leader, played a youtube video showing a skit done to the song called “Everything” by Lifehouse. You can watch the video at:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyheJ480LYA

The drama is very moving, as it tells of God’s love for us no matter what we’ve done. There were many tear-filled eyes in the room.

For those of you who were praying that God would bring 125 people to the Fremd rally:

 thank you!!

God is so good! Quite a few students heard the gospel message for the very first time on Friday:

…3 people accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior!

…42 people re-committed their lived to Christ!

Praise God! It has been absolutely amazing to see the community working together as the body of Christ this week . From people praying to the people who spoke at the rallies, Christians have rallied around Katie and Abby and other Uprising leaders as they lead this week’s events.

Palatine High School: Meant to Serve

Once again, we were priveleged to witness God moving in students’ hearts yesterday.  Pastor Eddie Perez was excited to speak to the 33 students in attendance at the first session.  He shared the story of how he came to faith in Jesus Christ and explained how God adopts us as His children.  ”Understanding your identity in Christ is the absolute essential in living a victorious Christian life,” he said.  His brother, Christian rapper Victor Duprey, also came and performed for the students.  Heather played a video of the Lifehouse “Everything” skit, and explained the story behind it – how different things in the world like money and self-image pull us away from God until we realize they cannot help us and He comes to our rescue.

Victor Duprey rapping

Because the group from yesterday’s second session were so interested in hearing more, but were unable to attend today’s first session due to after-school activities, Heather added a second session today as well.  She played a Coffey Anderson remix of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” featuring his own lyrics.  Mina, one of the Uprising members, shared her testimony on video also, sharing her struggles with self-abusive behavior and explaining how “it is by His [Jesus'] wounds, His cuts, that I am healed.”  Students were then given an opportunity to write down questions they had, which were answered by Michael T. and Ariel from the CSP team, with help from Heather and Cassie.

At the first session, 33 attended, 4 recommitted their lives to Christ, and 3 accepted Him for the first time.  At the second session, 10 attended, 5 recommitted their lives to Christ, and 2 accepted Him for the first time.  That’s 14 decisions made for Christ!

Here are a couple stories about them: During Mina’s testimony at the second session, one girl began to cry.  Afterwards, she took several books and magazines from the free table, and as Ariel was leaving the school, she saw her reading the gospel of John.  Heather discovered that she was one of the two who accepted Christ for the first time at the second session, and has made plans with her to get coffee and discuss her decision.  On Wednesday, Heather was excited to see that one young man she knows had indicated that he made a decision for Christ.  The following day he stayed for both sessions and afterwards to help with tear-down, a total of five hours, eagerly helping with anything Heather needed and clearly demonstrating a willingness to serve as well as an interest in the speakers.  On Wednesday he submitted the question “Why do some people suffer their whole lives?” Yesterday at the Q&A, another person asked the same question, so Ariel explained that God created the world good, but because man rejected God’s intention for good, suffering entered the world.  This young man raised his hand, saying he’d been thinking about the topic and the Titanic came to mind.  Obviously it was a tragedy, but as a result, we have learned to make better ships, he said.  It was encouraging to see a student asking questions and pursuing answers as a result of the rally.  Students are already being transformed by the power of the truth!

Thank you for your prayers for our team members at Fremd.  Cassie, Lainey, Kolby, and Michael T. are all feeling much better, though still a little sore.  Lainey talked to the mechanic who has her car today, and the mechanic told her that from the damage the car sustained, they should have been much more injured, especially since the impact caused all the seats to come off their tracks.  Had Lainey had her tires angled left, the way she was turning, the crash would have pushed the car into oncoming traffic and could have been fatal.  We are so grateful that God kept them safe.

Please pray:

- 125 students would come to the Fremd rally on this final day

- the room at Palatine would be full of students

- that everyone who comes would either accept Christ for the first time, or learn more about Him if they already know Him

- that the Uprising leaders would come away from this week feeling encouraged in what God has accomplished

The Power of Prayer and Divine Protection

Thank you for your prayers of protection from the last blog.  They were answered.

Today God moved in big ways in Palatine, IL & the devil didn’t want him to.

The back of the car after being rear-ended

Today at 5pm, four of us team members [Kolby Atchison, Cassie Carsrud, Lainey Cray & Michael Towson] found ourselves on the side of the road with hearts pounding after being victims of a high impact car crash.  We were stopped and waiting to turn left into a residential street for dinner at the Mitchell family home when our little Honda Civic was barreled into by a Nissan Titan truck going 45 mph.  We all sustained whiplash and other minor injuries but are okay!  Praise God!  We were the first car in the line & did not crash into anyone else nor get pushed into another lane.  Those in the at-fault car were not injured.  The police officers said that the injuries should have been worse…the backseat should have been crushed even more.

The evil one sees too many high school students getting excited about evangelism, the team being too excited ourselves and too many seeds of the gospel being planted in the hearts of high school students.  God allowed the accident to happen, but he did not allow us to get hurt.  Rather, we had angels surrounding the car protecting Kolby, Cassie, Lainey & Michael.

Today at the Palatine rallies, 50-60% of those who turned in comment cards re-committed their lives to Christ!  39 attended the first session, and 12 attended the second.  At the first session, three college students shared their testimonies and the love they have found in Christ, encouraging students to seek a relationship with Jesus and find ways to show love to others.  The smaller size of the second session allowed for a more personalized Q&A/discussion approach.  At the Fremd rally, Cassie Carsrud, team member, explained the gospel to a high school student, Becky, who had never heard it before.  45 attended the Fremd rally, and heard Steyn speak about finding our self-worth in Jesus Christ.  This was the highest attendance so far, since the Christian students are bringing their friends.

Praise God for answered prayers!  It is thrilling to see lives being changed by God through the Uprising students and those praying for them.  Health has not been a hindrance so far to the gospel being shared, although both Uprising leaders and a couple of us on the CSP team had been feeling poorly.

God moments today:

- a misunderstanding about the Palatine prayer meeting time this morning gave the Palatine CSP team and Uprising leaders an extended time of prayer

- Cassie Carsrud felt God calling her to a special emphasis on prayer today, giving her a sense that big things were going to be happening today.

- Heather, Palatine Uprising leader, was uncharacteristically reluctant to explain one of the videos she was planning to show at the rally, asking Justin from the CSP team to take the job.  Shortly before he was scheduled to speak, he began feeling nervous and texted Michael T. for advice.  Because Michael was bent over texting back in Lainey’s car, he only sustained minor whiplash.

- One of Lainey’s non-Christian friends felt sick she had such a strong feeling something was wrong with one of her friends at 4:50, minutes before the accident.

- Obviously, God’s hand of protection was seen in regards to the car accident.

Please pray:

- that God would continue to protect our team, the Uprising leaders and members, and the high schoolers, from anything the Enemy may use to try to prevent God’s truth from being received

- that the CSP Fremd team would heal quickly

- that by the end of the week, Fremd’s rally room would be filled to its capacity of 125

- that Heather and Cassie, Palatine Uprising leaders, would receive support and encouragement from friends and family

- for continual growth in those who recommitted their lives to Christ, and those who have not yet made a decision to accept him

The verses God put on Ariel’s heart this morning at the Palatine prayer meeting are certainly fitting: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil…  Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”  Ephesians 6:10-13

Fremd High School Outreach continues

“Uprising” club members saw another successful rally happen yesterday as a speaker talked on “Why save sex until marriage?” and students performed “What love really means” by JJ Heller.

Katie and Abby, Uprising leaders, were ready for the rally as soon as the bell rang to announce the end of school. They were surprised to find out that the room they had planned to use was no longer available and adapted quickly, moving to the faculty cafeteria. Katie was glad to see several people at the rally who she and her friends had invited to come.

The speaker encouraged the high schoolers to save sex until marriage because God has a plan for their lives and doing this can help them stay on track to be part of that plan. He encouraged students to adopt long-term thinking for their every day actions and made them aware of the fact that they are at a critical age that determines the course of their entire life.

After he spoke, Katie and Abby sang “What love really means” by JJ Heller as Abby played the acoustic guitar.  In the song, God speaks to a man, saying “I’ve watched you suffer all of your life and now that you’re listening, I’ll tell you that I love you for you. Not for what you have done or for who you’ll become. ”

The message of God’s grace is what the Uprising students at Fremd have on their hearts to spread to all the students who need to know what love really means.

Please keep praying that:

Non-Christians would come. Until now, we’ve had a mostly Christian audience. Pray that God gives Christians boldness in inviting their non-Christian friends.

Health and safety for the Biola team and the high schoolers.

Palatine High School: Meant to Live

We are seeing God working at Palatine High School!  Their first rally yesterday was built around the theme “Meant to Live,” and featured two guest speakers, Ryan Huguley and Eddie Williams.  42 students, primarily Uprising members, attended the first session, and 10 attended the second session.

Ryan Huguley, pastor of Redemption Bible Chapel, began by challenging the young men in the audience to dream big, be leaders, and set an example for our culture.  From there, he transitioned into a Q&A session, where students asked questions like “How do I know what God’s will is for me?” “What will the effect on my faith be if I don’t attend a Christian college?” and “What’s the difference between Christianity and other religions?”  In answer to the last question, he explained that Christianity is the only religion where God Himself comes to man in order to bridge the gap between man and God, rather than man having to work his way to God.

Eddie Williams from the Chicago Bears

Next Eddie Williams, a practice team player for the Chicago Bears, shared his testimony.  He told the students how growing up he learned to trust in his own capabilities to sustain him, taking pride in his athletic and academic achievements.  When injuries and bad grades became unavoidable, his faith in himself was shaken.  At the same time he was learning about God for the first time from a friend, and one day he began to pray.  He said he heard God answer him, saying “I have called you to be a disciple, to follow Me.”  He challenged the students to consider their priorities, since whatever comes first will dominate all of your life.  If that top priority is earthly, it ultimately will fail, leaving you lost.  Only Jesus Christ will never let you down, he said.

Heather and Cassie, the Uprising leaders, raffled off a Starbucks gift card and a Switchfoot t-shirt.  Heather encouraged the Uprising members to bring friends.  The first session was videotaped and replayed at a second session, which allowed those with after-school activities to attend the rally.  The Fremd CSP team was able to join the Palatine CSP team for this second session.

Cassie and Heather with the whole CSP team

Now for the really good news: on response cards the rally leaders passed out to the audience, two students indicated that they had rededicated their lives to Christ.  The CSP team also received an excited call from Heather saying that shortly after the rally, two of her college friends who attended were discussing what they heard, and one of the girls was able to help the other understand the message of salvation through Jesus Christ.  She prayed to receive Him into her life!  Praise God for changing hearts and making His truth known!

Please pray:

- CSP received an email from a mother asking for prayer for her junior daughter who attends Palatine.  Please pray that she will come to the rally and experience God in a new way.

-that the Uprising members would be courageous in inviting their non-Christian friends to the rally

-that those who attended would be able to connect what they heard with their lives and pursue a relationship with God

-for endurance and peace for Heather and Cassie, as they are working extremely hard in preparation for the rest of the week

Yesterday was a day filled with prayer, witnessing, and the first Fremd High School Rally in Palatine, Illinois.

Katie, Abby, Emily and Emily (students at Fremd) planned a prayer meeting for bright and early in the morning where Cassie, Lainey, and Michael (from the Biola team) joined them at 6:45am. The 7 prayed together for the day, the rally, and the students. A great way to start the day!

That same morning, Lainey received an encouraging e-mail from pastor Rick Wager from Grace Community Church. He wrote, “Keep making a difference. I am on my knees!”

…and then it was time for the first rally.

students listen as Jason Colley speaks at Fremd's first rally day

The rally encouraged Uprising members with a turnout of 38 students. The audience was mostly Christian students, and the speaker, Jason Colley from Young Life, addressed the question “Why do bad things happen to good people?” Jason, the speaker at the rally, explained to the students how the question is answered by two things. 1) God gave us free will so we could choose to love Him of our own accord. We used that free will to go our own selfish way. 2)  In light of His character, God did everything that He possibly could to save us from suffering by giving us the hope of a life without suffering in heaven one day.

Katie, Uprising leader, and Michael, CSP team member, prepping for the rally.

Katie, above, played a video about how God brings healing amid suffering to His people to illustrate that even while we are still on Earth, God is active in our lives. She challenged Uprising students to bring their friends to the rest of the rallies happening this week. Katie gave the students incentive by announcing that they will get one extra raffle entry to win an iPod shuffle for every friend they bring.

free materials available for students at the rally to take

The Biola team enjoyed a wonderful dinner, hosted by the Suiter family, and then met several students from Fremd and Palatine back at Woodfield Mall where we shared the good news of Jesus with 43 people.

Praise God for George, who came to know Jesus Christ as his personal savior at Woodfield mall! Please pray that he is able to grow quickly in his relationship with God.

Please Pray:

-That the seeds planted today will take root in people’s hearts by the power of the Holy Spirit

-That Uprising students would bring their friends to the rallies at both schools

-For the health of everyone involved, especially Heather and Katie, Uprising leaders at Palatine and Fremd.

Church and last day of prep.

Thousands of students from both Fremd and Palatine are listed on these prayer cards.

The Biola team started off the day with prayer in the morning before parting ways and heading to both Grace Community Church and Willow Creek Community Church. We met up with some of the student leaders and distributed prayer cards to hundreds of willing people who will be praying for Fremd and Palatine students all throughout the week!

We saw prayers beginning to be answered today at Willow Creek! About a week ago, the Fremd High School administration notified the Uprising students that faculty may not speak at their rallies, which leaves them with no speaker for Friday. However, God always has a plan… When Cassie Carsrud, CSP team member, was passing out prayer cards at Willow Creek, she happened to meet a Chicago Bears player named Eric Peterman, who she asked to speak on Friday. He hasn’t committed yet, but was very enthusiastic and will come if at all possible. Either way, he will be in prayer. Praise God for divine appointments!

After visiting the churches, the team split into three groups and stopped by the Willow Creek “house groups”, small groups where high school students fellowship with other Christians from their school. We enjoyed seeing part of a Willow Creek high schooler’s Sunday and making sure they knew about the opportunities to make a difference on their campus this week.

Next, Heather (Palatine Uprising Ministry leader) requested our help to put fliers (above) on the front doors of some Palatine students’  houses to promote the rally. We were able to distribute nearly 80 fliers in only an hour!

The Johansen family hosted us for a delicious dinner, representing how caring, generous and kind our Chicago community is.  We enjoyed the opportunity to answer their questions, meet their two children, Kiersten and Zach, who are Fremd students, and play games with the family.  We are truly blessed by their concern for the rally and willingness to pray with us.

In the evening, Cassie, Michael T. (from the Biola team) and Heather announced the upcoming rallies and passed out fliers to the youth group at Orchard EV Free Church.

“My favorite thing about today was the amount that we prayed and how we kept giving every aspect over to God” says Lainey, CSP Chicago team leader. We will see much more prayer throughout the rest of the week and are trusting in God’s Word where it is written, ”draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” James 4:8

Please pray:

Kolby at kick-off

-Kolby (CSP team member) has come down sick. Please pray he comes back into full health soon.

-Heather (Palatine Uprising ministry leader) is suffering from a shoulder injury that is causing her a lot of pain. Please pray for a miracle so that she can be able to focus on the rally and see it through to the end as well as be blessed by it.

-Katie (Fremd Uprising leader) has severe stomach pain and her family has the flu. Please pray for her health as well, as she and Heather are both feeling the pressure of the rally week.

-Please pray that God would bring a speaker for Fremd’s Friday rally, whether or not it ends up being Eric Peterman from the Chicago Bears.

-Please pray for continued safety for the team, that the rallies would go unhindered by the devil’s schemes this week and that the students at Fremd and Palatine will be open to hearing the gospel and that both campuses will experience the love of Christ!

Yesterday’s Kick-off Party

Cassie, a leader at Palatine, making a poster

Palatine and Fremd students gathered at Grace Community Church yesterday to decorate posters and kick off the rally week with dinner and encouragement from the Biola team and each other. 40 students listened attentively as the team from Biola and other volunteers encouraged them in the power of witnessing, prayer, and in the potential for God to move in big ways this week on their campuses!

Fremd and Palatine students listening as Lainey and Ariel interview 3 of the 4 leaders. Cassie, Katie, and Abby (left to right).

The speakers inspired students with ideas of immersing their campus in the gospel and making the name of Jesus heard more than anyone’s name has ever been heard before this week. ”I’m starting to get really excited about this,” said Meredith, a senior at Fremd.

After a wonderful lasagna dinner (many thanks to Ms. Ingrid Henderlight!), Mrs. Pam Cray shared her personal testimony with the group. She came to know the Lord through a similar rally in Tennesse and acted as living proof of how God can use willing students at a time like this. Mr. Tom Atchison volunteered to give pointers on how to have a grace-centered conversation, and the CSP team told stories of how God has moved in the past on other high school campuses.

“How can I get my friends to stop being afraid of what everyone thinks of them?” asked Rob, a student athlete at Palatine. The reality that God is really involved with his people and hears us when we pray inspired Rob to push his pre-game prayer meetings to a whole new level.

“I liked how much passion there was in the high school students wanting to make a difference for Jesus on their campus” said Justin after the event was over.

At the end of the kick-off, the group spent some time in prayer for the week and each student committed to praying for two specific non-Christians every day this week, that they might get to hear about the love of our Lord in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Kick-off Event today!

Our team is getting ready to kick off the rally weeks at Palatine and Fremd!  The Uprising clubs at both schools will be attending, along with students from other schools in the area, parents, and youth pastors – we’re expecting 50-70 people.  This will be a time for the community to get excited about what will be happening this upcoming week, meet the CSP team, hear from the Uprising leaders, make posters to promote the rallies, and dedicate the week to God in prayer.  We are so grateful to Grace Community Church for allowing us to use their building and supplies.

A couple quick prayer requests:

- That everything goes smoothly and professionally

-That the Christians in attendance would be encouraged and excited to see what God has already done and will be doing!
