Sharing Their Passion

Many Christian clubs hosted outreach rallies at their school around Easter this year, but the club at La Habra high did something different.

The Christian club students were so excited about sharing their faith individually with their peers that they decided to “share their passion” for Christ by witnessing after school every day for a week.

La Habra Christian Club with CSP Mentor Dan

In total, the club shared the gospel with 174 students and 4 made decisions to accept Christ. In the words of Brandon, the club president, “‘Share the Passion’ week has been AMAZING!”

Michael, the Biola Chapter Director, explained, “Usually high school students will go witnessing once or twice, but this much dedicated student witnessing is something I haven’t seen. It was awesome!”

A Conversation with Brandon

Last year, Brandon was the club president of the Christian Club at La Serna HS in Whittier. This year, the Biola freshman is helping his friend, Ryan, organize a weeklong outreach series this December. He says, “The resources of CSP gave Ryan a framework use and the club at La Serna is just running with it.”

When we caught up with Brandon, he had a lot to say about his experiences in ministry this year.

What’s it like being a campus mentor?

BT. Its been eye-opening. Because looking back in high school, I didn’t really know what CSP was, or what the mentor thing did…in high school I just saw them as good people who I could tell were really excited about helping the club and spreading the gospel but now with how much organization and structure there is in CSP, just how much logistics stuff you have to think about in terms of the rally, there’s just a lot more… And I have seen just how amazing it is to be in a pretty unique situation with the leadership at the high school.

Tell me about your involvement with the Christian club at La Serna. What did you want to do for ministry while you were in high school.

BT. Basically, my involvement with the Christian club in high school was motivated from just trying to see if the gifts that I thought God had given me of leadership and possibly ministry were worth pursuing, and I just fet like it was a natural thing for me to do. And so that led me to just get really involved sophomore year, and more of a leadership role Junior year, and club president Senior Year. It was interesting because looking at it now from a CSP perspective, I can see why I wasn’t successful in terms of the rally or two that I tried to plan. Just because I didn’t think of all the logistics. And didn’t think about all of the follow-up…just taking a lot of stuff for granted.

B. When you look back on that rally not happening, is that disappointing to you?

BT. Well, it’s kind of disappointing. [This fall] When we were having the [Campus Mentor Training Retreat] training for CSP and I was considering whether I was going to be a mentor or not, one of the things in the back of my mind was ‘Man, when I tried to plan a rally at La Serna, this wasn’t going well, and I didn’t do well at all.

Because you didn’t have that training.

BT. Because I didn’t have that training and because I didn’t feel like I was that creative, and didn’t think that I was that kind of person that could plan rallies. So that made me think, well, maybe a ministry that one of the main things it does is rallies isn’t for me. But looking back on it now, that was just me allowing my own insecurities about myself project on whether God wanted me to do this ministry or not, and trying to rely on my own power, when my own power wasn’t like good enough.

When you were in high school, was sharing the gospel with your friends a passion of yours?

BT. I think it was something that I looked for in my own life, and tried to do personally. But it’s never something that as a Christian club president I put forth to the club and said ‘Hey guys, we need to be praying about sharing our faith with people.’ When I took the president of the Christian club, I didn’t take it as much of an outreach ministry as just a place where the Christians could meet and be encouraged. And invite friends who were interested in the Christian club to come. It wasn’t so much as ‘ we’re trying to be this evangelistic ministry at La Serna’. I had desires to reach out to the rest of the campus, I just didn’t know how to do it..

So, because you didn’t know how, you just decided, ‘well, we can be a place for Christians’.

BT. Yeah. It was just not knowing how to do it, I was unsure of how to take the first step. So with the [Christian club] leadership there now, having seen me kind of do that thing, and him [Ryan] having that personality that’s just really charismatic, and wanting to do outreach, and having the resources of CSP gave him a framework to work in. He said ‘guys, I have this vision, I’m going to show you this vision’ and from what I’ve heard, [the club at] la serna is just running with it.

I think he was very much in the same situation I was; he really wanted to do outreach , he just didn’t know how to go about it or what he was going to do. I think he would have done something, but having the CSP training day that he went to gave him a framework. And now we’re collaborating.

What do you see as making your time worthwhile, and what’s fulfilling to you?

BT. I get a sense that I’m giving back to la Serna. God is allowing me to use the familiarity and the knowledge I have of my old high school to change my old high school. One of my main motivating factors is just trying to help Ryan. I see a great potential in him, and I’m trying to equip him and the rest of the leadership at la serna to just “do what I couldn’t” in a sense.

So, they’re having this rally next week. What are they and you hoping to see?

BT. The theme is ‘Why is Christmas more than Santa Claus’, and so the whole week  is centered around inviting people to consider why the celebrate Christmas in the first place, why they get this two-week chunk off of school.

[The Outreach Week] will be successful if it gets people thinking about why the Christian club would even try something like this, for a whole week. Why would it be so different from what we’ve ever seen from the Christian club before. I think it’s an effort to show people that the Christian club is there and that they have something to say.

They have something planned for every day of the week.

What kind of things should we pray for?

BT. Pray that the Christians at La Serna ‘own this’ and take possession of the Christian club at La Serna and become involved. So that not just Ryan and the leadership team are the ones promoting this vision and acting it out, but the whole club and the large contingent of youth groups from local churches around the area get involved. From what I remember, La Serna is not an antagonistic campus. It’s not like people are going to shout in your face because you told them something bout the bible. Pray that the Christians on campus would see this as an effort to spread the gospel and would want to be involved in that.

Easter Story 2010

The Thursday preceding Good Friday, California High School’s Christian Club, Campus Light, passed out Easter eggs to their peers. Inside these multi-colored eggs were scripture verses from the gospel of Matthew, candy with Christ insignias, and  invitations to join Campus Light every Tuesday during lunch.

After the Campus Light team handed out the eggs, some of the team members were able to talk with the students about the meaning of the eggs. Some other questions that were asked included, “What’s Campus Light? Where is it located?” Last, Campus Light members invited their fellow peers to the upcoming leadership meeting Thursday, the 15th of April.

Pray for Follow-up, Unity, Witnessing, and God’s work @ Fullerton

Club president Laurel asks for your prayers for Fullerton High.  The club had their first rally a few weeks ago with a great turn out–300 people!

-> Pray for follow-up with people from the rally

-> There are four denominations represented within the club… which shouldn’t cause any trouble… yet it could cause some divisions…  Please pray for unity in the club.

-> Pray for the witnessing.  Three students go out each Friday to share Jesus on their own.  They want more club-members to go!  Pray for hearts to be open.

  • The campus mentors are having a hard time scheduling to meet with the club leaders.  Even if that were not a problem, the administration does not want them on campus at club meetings.  So please pray that the mentors would be able to meet with the club leaders.
  • Pray that the Lord would be able to work through the club again this semester, even with a tougher administration.

Thanking God and praying for His continued work–Thank you!

I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 89:1

Dear prayer partner,

We are thanking God for a good week of ministry and fellowship, with each other and the students.

At Cal High’s rally, a Biola student named Fwas shared a deep message with 50+ students.  God had had truly filled the gap in his life, even after abuse, suicide attempts, thievery, and drugs.  Campus light students took initiative by giving their peers 40 tracks, 40 Gospel of John books, and some “The Case for Christ” DVDs.

Fifteen students from four schools were encouraged about the impact they could make on their campus when they met with some mentors at Troy high school.  Sharing Jesus in personal evangelism went well at Fullerton and California High.  Though some students were indifferent to hearing about Jesus, others appreciated taking spirituality seriously.

Really, the work at the schools we have worked with has just begun, and the main work we have done is to open up horizons for a life of outreach for the students. We are praying for God’s continued work at La Habra, California, Western, Fullerton, and Troy High Schools and their student leaders.

For more updates about what happened this week and in CSP, you can subscribe to the story of the week at www.californiaschoolproject.com. Or see specific school updates at www.blog.californiaschoolproject.com.

Thank you for partnering with us in your prayers.  We understand that spiritual victories are accomplished by spiritual means, and prayer is an essential part of developing leaders to make an impact for Christ.

More Christian club rallies and students reaching more students

Dear prayer partner,

It is good to participate in God’s good work!  Cal High’s Campus Light students invited one of their youth pastors share his testimony at their first rally this year.  He shared with 50 attentive students how God had saved him from being a drug-using sex-addict.  At La Habra High’s second rally, Pastor Chris McCulluck shared insights on the apostle Paul with another full house.  He clearly but genuinely presented the gospel.  Additionally, the club distributed a hundred more tracks and Gospel of John books.  Students asked for prayer after the rally and want to initiate a monthly Bible study.  God’s word and truth had impact on both campuses, making the rallies a success.  Praise the Lord!

Friday is perhaps the biggest day of campus involvement this week.

  • Cal High is hosting another rally.
  • CSP Mentors are meeting with Troy High School for the first time to share what students can do and how we can help mentor them.
  • We pray for the Lord’s empowerment as we share Jesus in personal evangelism with students at Cal High andFullerton High.

It has been a blessed week, full of God’s workings even as he works in unseen ways.  We desire to finish strong.  Thank you for continuing to bring these outreaches before Father God in your prayers!

Sincerely in Christ,

~Team January Project

January Project Detail Update

As we begin this week of the January Project many exciting and interesting happenings arose. To start the first night of January Project, 1/17/10, CSP members met at Starbucks and God began His work. God specifically drew CSP mentor Zach DeVesta aside to speak to a struggling individual about the Lord. The resulting conversation consisted of a testimony of a broken man who had lost all hope in the grace of Jesus Christ.

· Tuesday: went to visit La Habra to hang posters, pass out flyers to promote this week’s events that La Habra’s Christian club has worked so diligently to compile.
· Wednesday: Trevor Ford will be playing worship at La Habra’s Christian Club during lunch. Pizza will also be freely distributed to the individuals that are interested in attending this event.  Fullerton and California High School students will be sharing Jesus with their peers.   Please continue to pray for the spirit’s work in all this spiritual outreach!
· Thursday: Chris McCulluck will be offering a Bible study during the lunch period of the La Habra students. The Christian Club will be offering free pizza with courtesy to La Habra High School.
· Friday: La Habra’s Christian Club is still constructively deciding upon the activities of Friday.
Tuesday, January 19th, CSP mentor’s Zachary DeVesta, Danielle Decena, Dan Getzfred, and Michael Towson visited La Habra High School to help hang posters and pass out flyers to promote the Christian Club’s week long event. We had roughly thirty students from the Christian club participate in the hanging and distributing of the posters and flyers. Many of the students separated into small groups to their fellow peers that were still on campus with regards to the rain. It was truly a blessing that it had rained because students at La Habra are allowed to go off campus during lunch period and due to the weather they all remained on campus to receive the posters and flyers regarding the weeklong event. These posters included questions and statements such as, “Are you satisfied?” “Do you feel alone?” “Come to the Campus Light meeting this week and discuss your questions about God with us.” Thanks to the hard work that the La Habra Christian Club put into the making of these materials, it looks promising that many students will have the opportunity to hear the Word of God.

The January Project Prepares to Share Jesus

“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.  How are they to call on one they have not believed in? And how are they to believe in one they have not heard of?”  Romans 10:13-14a

Dear prayer partner,

The January Project has begun–a full week of CSP ministry focus and outreach, praise the Lord!  Students made posters and shared plans for an exciting week of rallies at La Habra and California High Schools.  Students will promote their rallies on Tuesday.  The rallies launch on Wednesday!

The Campus Light club at California High is amazingly self-motivated and unified. Please pray that their enthusiasm for spiritual things would continue when as they share Jesus with their peers every day for the rest of the week.  La Habra high is doing great!  Pray for boldness.  Students from both schools are sharing Jesus with their campus tomorrow in personal witnessing. It’s our prayer that God would open the hearts of students, to do this spiritual work by His Spirit.

Thank the Lord with us that schools are ready for a week outreach!  We pray it would be life changing.
